About Seongsan Ilchulbong
Seongsan Ilchulbong, also known as Sunrise Peak, is one of Jeju Island’s most famous natural landmarks. This majestic volcanic crater was formed over 100,000 years ago by underwater volcanic eruptions and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Located on the eastern coast of Jeju, Seongsan Ilchulbong offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and the island’s lush landscapes. The name "Ilchulbong" means "Sunrise Peak," and as the name suggests, it is one of the best spots in Korea to watch the sunrise. Many visitors hike to the top early in the morning to witness the spectacular view of the sun rising over the horizon.
The hike to the summit is relatively easy, taking about 20–30 minutes, and along the way, visitors can enjoy the unique rock formations and diverse plant life. At the peak, you’ll find a massive crater covered in grass, which adds to the site’s otherworldly beauty.
In addition to its natural wonders, Seongsan Ilchulbong is also close to Jeju’s famous Haenyeo (female divers) culture. Visitors can watch these skilled divers perform traditional deep-sea diving and even enjoy fresh seafood caught by them.
Whether you’re a nature lover, a hiking enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful yet stunning location to enjoy, Seongsan Ilchulbong is a must-visit destination in Jeju.
